Last year, my skin and I went through a difficult phase. After dealing with severe hormonal acne breakouts, buying foundation stopped being quite so simple. I still wanted to wear makeup, but I wanted something lightweight, comfortable, and natural-looking enough for an ordinary day. Enter L'Oréal's Nude Magique Cushion Foundation, a pretty little compact that made me wonder whether my everyday base could feel a lot less complicated.
There was a time when I could pick up a foundation, take a quick look at the shade, and think mostly about whether I liked the finish.
After last year's breakouts, I started paying a lot more attention to how a foundation felt on my skin. I didn't want anything heavy, and I certainly didn't want to spend the entire day thinking about my makeup.
My reliable choice for ages has been Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation. I've worn it so often, for work and on weekends, that I seem to repurchase it about every two months. At this point, buying another bottle is almost part of my routine.
But even when you've found something you like, the makeup aisle has a funny way of convincing you there might be something equally lovely waiting a few shelves away.
And lately, I've been curious about cushion foundations.
L'Oréal's Nude Magique Cushion kept catching my eye. The compact looked pretty, the promise of a fresh, luminous finish sounded like exactly what I wanted for summer, and the whole sponge-soaked-with-foundation concept seemed just strange enough that I needed to try it.
So, naturally, I brought one home.
A Foundation in a Compact? I Had Questions.
Cushion foundations have been popular in South Korean beauty for years, and now more familiar high-street brands are bringing the idea to our makeup aisles.
If you haven't tried one before, the concept is simple. Instead of pouring or pumping foundation out of a bottle, you open a compact and press an applicator into a sponge that's soaked with liquid foundation.
The product comes through the cushion, you pick up a little, and then you tap it onto your face.
It feels a little unusual at first, especially if, like me, you're used to liquid foundation in a bottle. But there's something quite satisfying about pressing into the cushion and seeing the formula appear.
The Nude Magique compact comes in a pretty purple-rose case with a mirror and a separate compartment for the included applicator puff. It's small enough to carry in my handbag, which is a lot more convenient than travelling with a bottle of foundation and hoping the cap stays firmly attached.
I also love having a mirror right there. It's a small thing, but it makes touching up my makeup away from home feel much easier.
What It's Like to Actually Use
The first thing I noticed was how light the formula felt.
It's very fluid, almost watery, and a little press into the cushion is enough to pick up product. It's easy to see why the formula is meant to give skin that fresh, dewy look rather than a heavy, full-coverage finish.
The included puff works with the compact, but I personally prefer using my Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. I'm used to the way it blends foundation, and I like how even the finish looks when I apply Nude Magique with it.
I've also found that a flat-top kabuki or stippling brush can work well. The cushion format looks different from a bottle, but once the product is on your applicator, you can blend it much like another liquid foundation.
The application actually reminds me a little of Bourjois Healthy Mix. It's smooth, easy to blend, and doesn't feel as though I'm trying to spread a thick layer of makeup across my face.
I prefer starting with a small amount and adding a little more where I want it. That seems to suit both the formula and the kind of finish I'm after.
The Finish Is What Won Me Over
You know those days when you want your makeup to make you look a little more awake, a little more even-toned, and a little less like you've been staring at your reflection wondering what your skin is doing?
That's the kind of day I want this foundation for.
Nude Magique gives me a luminous, natural-looking finish. It softens the appearance of uneven areas and makes my complexion look more even, but it doesn't create that obvious layer of foundation sitting on top of my skin.
The coverage starts light and builds toward medium when I add more. I can see why some people might want more coverage than this offers, particularly over very noticeable marks or active breakouts.
For my everyday makeup, though, I don't always want everything covered completely.
I want my skin to look like my skin, just with a little help.
The finish is softly dewy rather than flat matte, which I find especially pretty at this time of year. It gives my complexion a fresh look without making the makeup feel heavy.
The thing I like most is that I can see the result without constantly feeling the foundation on my face.
After being more cautious about makeup since my acne breakouts, that makes a real difference to how much I enjoy using it.
Of course, a foundation feeling light doesn't automatically mean it will suit everyone's acne-prone skin or prevent clogged pores. I'm talking about the way this particular product looks and feels on mine.
Does the Glow Last Past My Morning Coffee?
A beautiful finish at eight in the morning is one thing. I also want a foundation that still looks good after I've been out, gone to work, and got on with the rest of my day.
I've been impressed with how Nude Magique wears on me. It stays comfortable, and I haven't found it breaking apart or becoming excessively oily over the course of a normal day.
I've tried it both with and without setting powder. I like the fresh finish on its own, but a little powder is useful when I want to take down some of the shine.
The compact also makes touching up convenient. The built-in mirror means I don't have to bring half my makeup bag along just to check how my foundation is doing.
That said, if you strongly prefer a matte finish or need full coverage from morning until night, this probably isn't the kind of foundation you're looking for.
It's at its best when you actually want the glow.
The Details I'd Want to Know Before Buying It
I enjoy using this foundation, but there are a few practical things worth knowing before falling for the pretty compact.
Price: Around €14.99 where I've seen it, although the price can vary by shop and country.
Coverage: Light, building toward medium rather than full coverage.
Finish: Fresh, natural-looking, and luminous.
Application: Includes a puff, but I prefer using my Real Techniques sponge.
Packaging: A compact with a mirror, which is handy for carrying in a handbag.
Shade range: The range I've seen has seven shades, which feels far too limited for a foundation intended for so many different complexions.
SPF: The compact is labelled SPF 29. I treat that as an extra, not a replacement for my usual sunscreen.
That shade range is my biggest reservation.
Seven options don't leave much room for the variety of skin tones and undertones people actually have. Finding a foundation with a formula you like is frustrating enough without discovering that none of the shades quite matches your face.
And while I appreciate the SPF on the label, I wouldn't rely on the small amount of foundation I wear for my sun protection. A separate sunscreen is still part of the routine.
Would I Choose It Over Healthy Mix?
That's the question I was curious about when I bought it.
Healthy Mix has been my reliable everyday foundation for so long that I wasn't really expecting one new product to send it into retirement.
Nude Magique hasn't made me stop liking it. What it has done is give me another option, particularly on days when I want a lighter-feeling base and a fresh finish.
I can still appreciate a familiar foundation in a bottle and enjoy the convenience of a cushion compact. I don't need to declare one the winner and banish the other from my dressing table.
Makeup would be considerably less fun if we were only allowed to like one thing at a time.
I bought L'Oréal Nude Magique Cushion because I wanted to try something different from my usual foundation. After last year's acne breakouts, I was especially interested in finding an everyday base that felt comfortable and looked natural.
This one has been a lovely discovery.
I like its light texture, the way it blends, the luminous finish, and the fact that I can carry it around without worrying about a bottle leaking into my handbag.
The shade range needs work, and it won't be enough coverage for everyone. But for the kind of everyday makeup I enjoy wearing, it gives me what I was looking for.
I don't need my foundation to make my skin look like somebody else's. I just want to put it on, feel good, and get on with my day.
